Schedule for Classes

Overview
Obedience training classes are offered as a community service for the dog owner who wants a well-behaved companion, both in the home and out in public. Instruction is also offered for those who wish to do more advanced work with their dogs or compete in the various obedience trails held throughout the year.

Classes are held on Monday Evenings at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, Fairgrounds Road, Monterey. When you register for the classes you will receive a schedule indicating the dates and location of your classes. Participation in the Beginning class is by advance reservation only. The Beginning class teaches you how to train your dog to:

1. Walk calmly by your side
2. Stand quiently while being examined
3. Stay in both the sit and down positions
4. Come when called

We also offer practical advice on common dog behavior problems, such as jumping, barking, digging.

The Beginning Class lasts for eight weeks, starting at 6:30 pm and ending at 7:15 pm each Monday. The final class session is a "graduation exercise," modeled after actual novice obedience events. The cost of the entire series of lessons is $100. Class size is limited, space is reserved on a first come, first served basis. Your spot is not confirmed until your enrollment form and payment are received. Dogs must be at least six months old to enroll and must have current Rabies, Parvo and DHLP vaccinations.

Additional Classes offered are:

Intermediate I     5:00 – 5:45 pm
Advanced           5:45 – 6:30 pm
Beginning           6:30 – 7:15 pm
Intermediate II    7:15 – 8:00 pm
Intermediate III   8:00 – 8:45 pm

Fees
These classes last for eight weeks at a cost of $100 per session, except for the Advanced class, which costs $80. A Companion Dog (C.D.) title or the equivalent and the ability to retrieve dependably is required for admission to the Advanced class.

Students may "drop in" to Intermediate and Advanced classes for a fee of $12 per class if space is available. "Drop in" privileges are not available in the Beginning class.

Objectives
Beginners   Basic obedience including heeling, sit, down stand, come and stay. All work is done on leash. This does not duplicate puppy classes
Intermediate   Continuation of the above skills. Introduction to off-leash work is included at the intermediate II level. intermediate III is for those planning to compete at the Novice level.
Advanced Open and Utility work. Dog must have a CD or the equivalent and be able to retrieve.

Additional requirements
Dog must be at least 6 months old. Handlers must be at least 14 years old. You will need a chain link slip collar just large enough to fit over your dog's head and a 6-foot leash made of leather. (No chain leashes.) Handlers should wear non-skid shoes. Please DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG before coming to class. Handlers are expected to clean up after their own dogs. Please potty your dog ONLY in the area provided, and do not allow male dogs to mark against fences, shrubbery or building.

Registration
To secure your place in class, your check must accompany your completed registration form. There will be a $25 service charge on all returned checks. You will be sent a confirmation a week or two prior to the start of class. For information contact Arline Lovett 831. 484.2777

About the Instructor
Our instructor for obedience classes is Mrs. Pluis Davern. Mrs. Davern has been training all breeds of dogs for over thirty years. She has worked with retrievers, spaniels, and pointing breeds in field trials and hunting tests; has completed obedience titles with many dogs, and trains disaster search and rescue dogs. After a long and distinguished career as a professional dog show handler, in 2000 Mrs. Davern applied for Judging privileges from the American Kennel Club. She is currently approved to Judge the entire Sporting Group.
